Ballarat
Ballarat is the perfect place for a short term break or longer stay; it is an easy 112km drive from Melbourne. Victoria's larges inland city and regional centre has retained many of its classic Victorian buildings erected from the wealth of the 1850's goldrush. Ballarat was the site of Australia's only civil uprising- in 1854, a group of miners led by Irishman Peter Lawlor refused to pay Government licence fees. The rebellion led to clashes with police and soldiers, resulting in the deaths of 22 diggers and three soldiers. The even is now known as the Eureka Stockade.
