Great Ocean Road
This legendary coastal route, starting at Torquay and extending 285km west via Lorne, Apollo Bay and Port Campbell NP to Warrnambool, is a journey along a stretch of spec-tacular coastline with seaside holiday towns, surf beaches, dramatic cliffs, expansive ocean views, rainforest and woodlands.
It was built between 1919 and 1932 as employment for returned servicemen and as a memorial to soldiers who died in WWI. The road was designed to be a tourist route of world repute along the wild sea-coast. More than 100 (some believe as many as 700) ships have been sunk by reefs, foul weather and the treacherous waters of the Southern Ocean; the stretch to Peterborough is a stark reminder of the perils of this jagged coastline.
Historic seaside towns provide safe sandy beaches as well as surfing beaches. Whale watching, horseriding, bushwalking and mountain bike riding, are just some of the activities of this remarkable region.
